The Supreme Court has recently begun a hearing that could potentially overturn the ruling on Roe v. Wade, giving a woman the right to have an abortion. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi weighed in on the hearing, criticizing the conservative justices for their stances on the matter.
During the press conference last week, Pelosi zeroed in on the Supreme Court’s conservative justices, which hold the majority, for their views on abortion as the recent hearing can potentially overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling.
The House Speaker also explained how her personal experience with raising children as well as how religion should not affect the right of other people to seek an abortion. This follows Republican-led states seeking to pass legislation that would put a ban on abortion.
“Sometimes I think they need a session in birds and the bees for some of the kinds of statements that they make. I say that as a mother of five — six years and one week, five children…as I say to my colleague when you have five children in six years and one week, we can discuss the issue,” said Pelosi.
“That was great for me,” said the California Democrat regarding her experience in giving birth and raising children. “That’s not necessarily great for other people and it shouldn’t be up to any of us to decide what a woman and her family and her husband … her partner decides for them and their family and their future childbearing possibilities.”
One of the statements Pelosi referred to was that of Justice Samuel Alito, who stated that the fetus indicates “an interest in having a life.” Justice Sonia Sotomayor also recently warned that overturning Roe v. Wade would damage the Supreme Court’s ability to serve as well as its reputation.
Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has been subject to attacks from several House Republicans, said that she is confident that Pelosi would take action against Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert for the recent Islamophobic attacks made against her.
Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Omar said that she has spoken with Pelosi, recalling the time she felt unsure of whether she would be accepted to Congress due to her Muslim faith, but Pelosi at the time assured her that it would be taken care of.
Omar added that Boebert should be punished for her Islamophobic rhetoric.
